From the recording War Dog The Musical
Lyrics
Daylight rises as a new day wakes
Through silence a siren bends and shakes
Everyone stirs heading to the square
Waiting for news hearts tight with care
Did you hear it A whisper in the wind
Through the trees a message pinned
A son must march east to the fight
While a brother too young must stay in sight
Even our brave Ranger is restless now
He won’t chase the crows he just stares
He looks down the valley as if he knows
They may not return from where the battle goes
There’s a storm on the horizon hush before the cry
Ashes fall fathers sleep children dream while names march by
Whispers thread the morning wind trembling through the square
We hold our breath we clasp our hands hearts bare
The postman swears it’s true!
A list of names called to the battlegrounds…
Half of them are all of you
We were safe but now the seas are shifting
Is it really coming or fear whispering in our ears
Tell the children to light the lanterns
Lock the doors Be ready
Whispers in the hall whispers in the square
They’re coming and we’re unprepared
Peace once promised broken by men
Who’ll leave and might never come home again
Mr Hale Ma’am I come here on orders
That dog you got Ranger he’s to report
Tracking co ords
He’s needed in Frontline work
He’s been registered and he’s needed
NO he guards the coop and he sleeps inside
We need to chase off the wolves
And he sees us through the day
You want men for this war Not mutts you just use for slaughter!
He’s not yours to take into the war And out of view
Not just sons even dogs must march away
What’s a farm with no protector
What will night be without a day
Children cling mothers weep the wind carries our cries…
I kissed my son at sunrise he said
Don’t worry I’ll be brave
Storm on the horizon skies shatter and crack
If we cry and lose each other now
Will calm crawl back
The echoes linger the village waits hearts hammering in the square
